Morse code is a communication system using short (dot ·) and long (dash −) signals to represent letters and numbers. Developed in the 1830s by Samuel Morse, it was the dominant form of long-distance communication before voice radio.

How do I read Morse code?

Each letter is separated by a space, each word by three spaces (or /). A dot is a short signal, a dash is 3x the length of a dot. For example, SOS is ··· −−− ···.

What does SOS stand for in Morse code?

SOS (··· −−− ···) was chosen as a distress signal not because the letters mean anything, but because the pattern is easy to send and recognize — three shorts, three longs, three shorts.

Can I use slashes to separate words?

Yes. Both space-separated groups and forward-slash (/) separated groups are recognized as word separators when decoding.
