What is a hash function?

A hash function takes any input and produces a fixed-size output (the hash or digest). The same input always produces the same hash, but tiny input changes create completely different outputs — making hashes useful for verifying data integrity.

Is SHA-1 still secure?

SHA-1 is cryptographically broken for collision resistance and should not be used for security-critical purposes (signatures, certificates). It remains useful for non-security checksums like file integrity verification.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. All hashing uses the WebCrypto SubtleCrypto API running entirely in your browser. Your text and files never leave your device.

What's the difference between SHA-256 and SHA-512?

SHA-256 produces a 256-bit (64 hex character) digest; SHA-512 produces a 512-bit (128 hex character) digest. SHA-512 is slightly slower but provides a larger security margin. Both are part of the SHA-2 family and currently considered secure.
